What to see in Pizarra?
This small municipality in Malaga, located in the Guadalhorce Valley, has a large number of attractions to see on your visit to Pizarra. Take note of them to visit them when you visit this town.
The Saint of Slate: the Sacred Heart of Jesus
In 1916, the IV Count of Puerto Hermoso, Don Fernando Soto Aguilar, had a Sacred Heart cast in bronze and cast iron 2.5 m high to place it at the top of the mountain range. The monument was blessed on January 12, 1921 by Blessed Don Manuel González, Bishop of Malaga.
During the Civil War in 1936, the monument was destroyed, but in 1940 a wooden Cross was placed in the same place, housing the remains of the Saint. This Cross was later destroyed by lightning and replaced in 1994 for the Enthronement of a new Heart of Jesus, the work of Jaén sculptor Miguel Fuente Del Olmo.
Since February 28, 1995, an event is held annually to commemorate this new location, where the current Sacred Heart stands on one of the highest points of the Sierra de Gibralmora, looking towards the town of Pizarra and its plain.
Guadalhorce Bridges
The first factory bridge in Pizarra it was built in 1863 by the railway company directed by Jorge Loring Oyarzábal, as part of the Málaga-Córdoba railway. This structure was replaced in the first third of the 20th century.
Another notable bridge, a civil engineering work of the same period, crosses the A-343 regional road from Antequera to Zalea. This bridge was erected by the engineer Ginés de Fe y Pérez.
The construction of these bridges is part of the large hydraulic infrastructures promoted by the engineer Rafael Benjumea y Burín, Count of Guadalhorce. In addition, the Villalón ford stands out, a river crossing point with a recent creation and memories of a small stick bridge in its vicinity.
Church of Saint Peter the Apostle
At the end of the 15th century, Diego Romero ordered the construction of the old Church of San Pedro in Pizarra to meet the needs of the servants. In the 17th century, due to the increase in population, the current temple was built on the previous site. This temple, with a single Mudejar nave, houses a tower with three sections, the third being added in 1862 by the Malaga to Córdoba Railway Company.
The Church has experienced looting and destruction during events such as the War of Independence and the riots of 1931 and 1936. Most of the current elements inside were acquired after 1939, thanks to the help of the Counts of Puerto Hermoso and the local community.
The interior of the church presents notable elements, such as the Baptistery with a Baptismal Font from 1617 and an image of the Stmo. Resurrected Christ. The old Sacramental Chapel, saved from the looting of 1931, houses a 18th century altarpiece. Other highlights include the Virgin of the Rosary, the High Altar dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the St. Christ of Forgiveness, considered the crowning work of Sebastián Santos Rojas. Among other jewels, the church keeps silver oil lamps and the burial vault of Don Juan de Figueroa y Silva and his wife Doña Elvira de Céspedes, dated 1680.

Our Lady of Fuensanta Hermitage
Erected in the 16th century on the ruins of an ancient semi-rupresal Mozarabic church, the Church of the Virgin of Fuensanta in Pizarra is one of the jewels of the Pizarra municipality. Its unique structure presents a single nave sculpted in the rock and divided into three sections by transverse arches supported on plates. The hollow vault covers the section closest to the foot, while the remaining two display groin vaults with rosettes in the key, characteristic of 18th century art.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the church experienced a comprehensive restoration, during which the old wooden altarpiece was replaced by a marble one that still exists. The current façade, in an elegant neo-Gothic style, was erected in the first decade of the 20th century, adding a distinctive touch to the structure.
Inside this sacred place resides the venerated image of the Virgin of Fuensanta, considered the patron saint of Pizarra. This church is not only an architectural testimony of different eras, but also a meeting point with devotion and history rooted in the local community.
La Raja Ancha

Municipal Museum of Pizarra
The Municipal Museum of Pizarra, located in the Cortijo Casablanca, presents two exhibition rooms that house a collection of around 6,000 archaeological and ethnographic pieces, as well as works by the painter Gino Hollander, covering 800 m2 of surface. This tourist complex includes an Assembly Hall, Restaurant and a Rural Hotel, surrounded by beautiful garden areas and ample parking spaces.
The permanent rooms, «Gino Hollander» and «Agustín Clavijo», exhibit everything from archaeological pieces to traditional rooms, accompanied by the painter's work.
Visiting hours are Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the mornings and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the afternoons. Closed on Tuesdays.
Admission prices vary depending on age and group size, and on Wednesdays admission is free.
Hiking

Palace of the Counts of Puerto Hermoso
Diego RomeroAfter the Reconquest of Malaga in 1490, he received 100 bushels of land and, later, another 20 bushels in Pizarra. He founded the town by building his farmhouse, the first church and delivering lots. His daughter, Juana Romero de Orellana, founded a Mayorazgo in 1535 that lasted until the 19th century.
The current palace, in neo-Mudejar style, was built in the 20th century on the old Mayorazgo houses, highlighting its structure and garden with Wisteria. The palace houses notable possessions such as Goya paintings, tapestries, oriental porcelains and silverwork. Its ceiling in the living room uses the Mudejar coffered ceiling technique.
The house witnessed historical events, such as the overnight stay of King Alfonso XIII in 1921 and the "Slate Conference" in 1922 to plan the Spanish protectorate of Morocco. Residence of the Counts of Puerto Hermoso, the palace is not open to the public, except on special occasions.
