History of the Arab Castle of Álora

Initially erected by the Phoenicians, this historic enclave was later fortified by the Romans, although unfortunately it suffered devastation from vandals in one of their raids. However, it resurfaced from its ruins thanks to the work of the Arabs, who painstakingly restored it, transforming it into an imposing residence and citadel.

In this scenario, the old mosque gave way to the majestic parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, a work that took almost a century to build, between 1600 and 1699. The temple, with its three naves separated by imposing Tuscan columns and covered with elegant wooden frameworks, stands as an architectural testimony of great splendor.

The passing of time did not leave the Castle unscathed, being affected by the earthquake of 1680. Since then, it served as a cemetery. Although only two partially reconstructed towers and a horseshoe arch in the wall remain today, in 1931 it was honored with the title of National hystoric monument.

The church tower, a witness to history, still shows the scars of history, marked by bullet wounds fired by a squadron of French cavalry in August 1823. These shots knocked down the commemorative plaque of the Constitution of Cádiz, adding intriguing chapters to the rich narrative of this captivating Arab Castle of Álora.
