History of Casarabonela

The history of Casarabonela is fascinating, with traces of human occupation dating back to prehistoric times. The Roman era left its mark on the area, when it was known as Castra Vinaria. However, it was during Arab domination that Casarabonela reached its maximum splendor and strategic relevance. During the 10th century, it was part of the Bobastro defensive belt in the rebellion against the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba and, in the year 922, it became the center of operations against the rebels. At that time, the municipality was known as Qsar Bunayra.

After the reconquest, Casarabonela lived a time of coexistence between Moors and Christians, but tensions led to the expulsion of the Moors, followed by the repopulation of the town with Christians from other regions of Spain. In 1574, Casarabonela obtained the status of Villa.

The War of Independence in 1810 also left its mark on Casarabonela, since José Bonaparte spent the night in the town on his trip to Malaga. In 1836, Carratraca was separated from the municipality, and Casarabonela retains its current extension.
